Name of Game/Activity:

Spacewalk

Time for this activity:

10 – 15 min

Supplies needed:

A chair for each camper.

Group organization:

The group acts out the activity together.

Description of activity:

·          The campers are about to venture into space on a spaceship and then land on an unknown planet!

·          The chairs should be arranged into 4 rows and 4 columns (the spaceship).

·          Have the campers each select a chair and tell them this is their spaceship to travel to a new planet.

·          When they ‘board’ they should buckle-up their safety straps. Tell them it will be a bumpy take-off.

·          While they get settled in, have them brainstorm what it is like to be in space. They should be prepared to walk/move slowly and a bit exaggerated.

·          Begin take off by counting down from 10. When blast off occurs, have them tremble/vibrate in their chairs to simulate the bumpy take-off. Also ask them to  act out how they would feel if they were really leaving earth!

·          After about 30 seconds, tell them they are now in space and ask them what they might see out the window.

·          The ship lands on the new planet. Have them release their safety harnesses to move about and practice their spacewalk before exiting.

·          The campers will exit the spaceship and begin to walk around the planet. Ask them what they see or if they encounter anything unusual (acting it all out while telling you).

·          After a few minutes, it is time to return home.

·          Reboard the ship, buckle-up and countdown for the return.

·          Again, the take-off is bumpy so they should show that by trembling in their chairs.

·          Once they land on earth, they unbuckle and exit the spaceship and show by movements and facial expressions how happy they are to be home.

Soaring Birds

Time for this activity:

10 – 15 min

Supplies needed:

Group organization:

The group acts out the part together.

Description of activity:

·          Tell the campers they are going to be birds and they will fly up around the world to see some amazing sites!

·          First have them describe a few things about their bird: what color are they, are they big or small, do they have babies at home in their nest, where do they live (in a tree in a backyard or on the edge of steep cliff), what is their name (they can make up a name, like ‘sally the seagull’).

·          Once they have an idea of what kind of bird they, then tell them they are about to begin their journey and they need to warm up: flap their wings a few times, practice a little run to take-off and a slow down run to land, stretch their necks so they can peer around and see everything.

·          Start with a take-off and then feel the rush of wind as they begin. Tell them they are free to fly around, just to watch out for other birds!

·          The first place to visit is a beautiful lake with a forest all around. Ask them what they see.

·          Have them swoop down to the side of the lake to land and take a little birdbath.

·          Other places to visit: Rain Forest/Jungle, Mt. Washington, South Pole, their neighborhood, the Ocean, Hawaii, etc.

·          For each place, ask them what they see or how they feel or if they like it so much they want to move their nest to this new place.

Role Reversal

Time for this activity:

10 – 15 min

Supplies needed:

Two chairs, a soccer ball, paper to draw on and crayons/markers.

Group organization:

Pet Show

Time for this activity:

10 – 15 min

Supplies needed:

Ribbons for awards (can be made or purchased by one of the counselors on a day prior to this activity) to be taken home. Each camper will receive a ribbon. Paper and pen (three pens, 24 sheets of plain paper)

Group organization:

The campers independently portray a pet for the show. The counselors are the ‘judges’.

Description of activity:

·          Have the campers think of a pet they would like to be (cat, dog, snake, hamster, etc). Tell them they will be in a pet show, so they will also have to answer questions: what is their name, what do they like to eat, what tricks do they do, are they washed and combed everyday, where do they sleep, what games do they play with their owner, do you have long or short hair, do you have spots, what does your animal say (what noises do they make?)

·          The campers will line up and then one at a time will walk past the three judges to act out their pet and answer two or three questions.

·          At the end, the campers will all be congratulated and each given a ribbon for different categories: well groomed, silliest trick, coolest trick, scariest trick, best tail, longest whiskers, tallest ears, biggest paws, littlest paws, loudest bark, bravest, most spots, most cuddly, fastest runner, best ball fetcher, sweetest meow.

Group organization:

We will go over rules and safety for this activity (5 min). Pass the groceries is kind of like reverse musical chairs. Campers pass an item around the circle until the music stops. Whoever has the item keeps it. The game continues until everyone has an item. (15 minutes). Campers will be divided in half or thirds for Memory Tray. Counselors lay out the items for campers to look at. Have campers close their eyes and counselor takes away one item. See if they can figure out the item. Start with small number of items and add to make it tougher. Also can take away more than one item or let campers “lead” (20 Minutes).
